Women Producers Selection
$16.00 – $80.75
As a women-owned business, Electric City Roasting takes special notice of other women doing incredible things in coffee. Our Women Producers selections come from farms owned and operated by women, and we dedicate this offering to their hard work.
Our first Women Producers selection came during the 2016-2017 harvest season from Cooperativa RAOS (Regional de Agicultores Organicos de la Sierra) in Honduras. We began working with the cooperative in 2015, and were thrilled to see both the quality and quantity of their coffees improve due in part to enthusiastic support from small roasters like us. We jumped at the opportunity to source Women Coffee Producer lots from members of their cooperative. At the time, the co-op included 77 women-led farms. Now we are able to buy several bags from the women producers each year. We also continue to support the cooperative as a whole, purchasing coffees from the mixed group to use in our other blended offerings.
One of the reasons the cooperative is determined to market its women members’ coffee is that 60% of the women face gender-based legal issues regarding the ownership of their land. They also face limitations to the credit they can receive to finance the harvest each year. In addition to the program premiums these women receive, Cooperativa RAOS has many active educational support programs open to all members. Women members of the cooperative hold gender assemblies to discuss the women’s needs and ways of increasing equity within the group and community.
“Gender equity means that women and men have the right to equal and fair access to the use, control, and benefits from the same goods and services of society, as well as to decision-making in the areas of social, economic, and social life, as well as politics.” This is Cooperativa RAOS’s mission statement with regards to gender. The organization supports this philosophy through the development of training farms and integrated farm-management programs. They work to increase access to these programs, as well as organic-farming support, for all members including the women farmers.
The current Honduras coffee is a sparkling example of coffees typical for the region. It features base notes of cocoa, apple-like acidity and caramel sweetness. Make this coffee your delicious, everyday selection, or choose it as a meaningful gift to the women in your life. We occasionally change the coffee in our Women Producers Selection, always making sure to source organic, fair trade lots. You can read about an earlier iteration, Mexican GRAPOS, here.
