Top 10 Coffee Resolutions for the New Year
It’s that time again! Time for fresh starts, new perspectives, forward motion. Whether you are a cafe owner or a new barista, we put together a list of achievable coffee resolutions or “life themes” for coffee professionals in 2017:
Coffee Resolution #1: Learn more!
We should be experts in our field. In this age of technology, you can LITERALLY learn anything you want. There are so many free videos/classes/webinars/podcasts available if you look around and put yourself out there. Even if you have to give the green stuff, think of it as an investment. And what better thing to invest in than yourself! In the words of the ever-wise Dr. Seuss, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Coffee Resolution #2: Treat others as you want to be treated!
This is the age-old classic adage, and its timelessness can enrich so many life situations! As a barista, this is huge – putting others first is not only great for your own personal chi, but is so attractive in a customer service setting and can set you apart in the business world, like a diamond in the rough.
Coffee Resolution #3: Find a mentor!
Look for someone you admire in life, or in coffee. Follow them on social medias, and be inspired! If possible, try to connect with them through email or better yet, set up a coffee date. Glean wisdom from those who have paved the way!
Coffee Resolution #4: Simplify!
De-clutter your closet, your inbox, your mind, your workspace. We all know this practice is proven to increase productivity. Let’s buckle down and do it!
Coffee Resolution #5: Go and explore!
Go to conferences, seminars, classes, events, throw-downs, coffee shops, anything coffee-ish. Drive a few hours if you have to, it can only do good for you. Check out the Specialty Coffee Association of America for events near you.
Coffee Resolution #6: Get a haircut!
If you want to be treated as a professional, then you need to act as a professional. This doesn’t mean trade in your identity for a briefcase and a tie, but it does mean ironing your shirt, standing straight, speaking well, shaking hands and making eye contact, doing your work with excellence to the best of your ability! If you feel good, you will do good. People can’t help but take you seriously if you take yourself and your work seriously.
Coffee Resolution #7: Reuse to reduce waste!
Did you know France has recently become the first country in the world to ban all disposable cups (and plates) by 2020? Be a part of the solution and invest in a reusable coffee container. Get something you love so that you will actually use it! And put it next to your coffee maker or near your front door so you won’t forget to take it with you in your daily adventures. Some of our favorites are Klean Kanteen and KeepCup (Chewbacca 16 oz. “Coming Soon”….’nuff said).
Coffee Resolution #8: Drink a lot of coffee!
This is your industry…get into it! Do something every day to expand your palate. Get that new and improved flavor wheel out and posted where you can reference it often. Drink the same coffee roasted different ways, drink coffee from different origins, drink coffee processed different ways, drink coffee from different shops and roasteries!
Coffee Resolution #9: Drink a lot of NOT coffee!
Wine, beer, kombucha, tea, cascara…all can enhance your palate and round out all your little taste buddies. Shoot for the stars, like British coffee taster Gennaro Pelliccia, whose tongue is insured for 10 million pounds!
Coffee Resolution #10: Breathe and Smile!
Start your day with 10 minutes of nothing. Meditate, talk to the One upstairs, stretch – do whatever you do to get your mind in the right place. Breathe deep and smile. This is your life! You can handle whatever challenges come your way today with grace and ease. Remember, coffee tastes better if the barista pouring it is happy (See Coffee Resolution #2)
